He stared at the blank screen, the cursor blinking mockingly. The deadline for the senior project loomed, and now this. Michael slammed his laptop shut, the sound echoing in his small apartment. The news felt like a physical blow. He felt a strange disconnection, as though he were observing himself from a distance, watching his own despair unfold. He wanted to scream, to break something, but the inertia held him fast, a prisoner in his own fatigue. He pushed away from the desk, unable to face the task ahead.
